Due to the orientation of the existing building, adjacency to other buildings of height, and the nature of the sunken lightwells, the majority of outdoor spaces are in partial to full shade throughout the year.

Landscape Concept

A secret garden is a carefully crafted retreat that balances connection and contemplation. Climbing plants offer privacy while inviting exploration, and the design emphasises hidden spaces for moments of discovery. The gardens unfold in layers, with paths leading to raised planted terraces, inviting exploration without revealing everything at once.

Natural materials anchor the spaces in their surroundings, and the use of levels of planting create depth. Seasonal changes bring fresh elements of surprise—new blooms in spring, vibrant leaves in autumn—making each visit unique.

The design balances sensory engagement and tranquillity with spaces offering stimulation and stillness. It’s a therapeutic landscape that encourages connection, offering quiet places to breathe and recharge in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

The landscape masterplan has been established through the development of the client brief, comprehensive desk-based and site-based studies, and the analysis of the existing site and context, followed by concept development.

The design aims to enhance three key external spaces with new planting that softens the environment, increases biodiversity, passively captures and slows rainwater, filters airborne particulates to improve air quality, sequesters carbon, and fosters direct biophilic connections with nature.

The spaces will provide valuable outdoor areas for both pupils and staff, designed to be inclusive with level access, and incorporating materials and furniture that support accessibility, usability, and enjoyment for all.
