A retrofit re-use project to redefine and rejuvenate the historic Grade II Listed building, terraced roof gardens and ground-level landscape for a contemporary office environment, with design principles founded on the original vision for the gardens.

To be informal, elaborate, romantic, overflowing, and tumbling.

The building and terraced gardens are affectionately known as the ‘Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke’.

The iconic building and landscape are being re-used and retrofitted to become a gold-standard modern office space targeting top-grade BREEAM Outstanding and International WELL Building Institute Platinum certifications.

Design Principles

+ Preserve, sustain and regenerate the original design vision for the gardens

+ Retain and re-use first principles

+ A resilient and regenerative approach to planting

+ A successionary tree strategy

+ Improve access, inclusivity, and use of the gardens

+ Improve on-site biodiversity and enhance habitat connections to the wider landscape

+ Foster connections with nature through Biophilic design principles

The landscape proposals aspire to exceed a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain requirement.

86 new trees and over 22,500 new plants are to be planted.

Construction is due to be completed in Summer 2024.
